It's 1939 and the country is slowly coming out of the depression, war is on the horizon in Europe and Hollywood is producing some of its finest films.
Here is a schedule* of the films we are showing on the big screen this summer every Thursday from June through August. You won't want to miss these classics as they were meant to be seen in the beautiful Riviera Theatre on the big screen.

June 26 7:30pm Wizard of Oz Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr and Jack Haley In this charming film based on the popular L.Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage. July 3 7:30pm Mr. Smith Goes to Washington James Stewart, Jean Arthur and Claude Rains Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal. Run time - 129 min. |

July 17 7:30pm The Man They Could Not Hang Boris Karloff and Lorna Gray Mad Scientist, Dr. Henryk Savaard, is obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. The police are alerted of Savaard's activities by his assistant's girlfriend. Savaard is arrested, convicted and sentenced to hang. He vows revenge on the judge, jury and district attorney. After the hanging, his assistant claims Savaard's body and uses Savaard's technique on it. Savaard is brought back to life. Now he can seek sweet revenge on his prosecutors. Run time - 138 min. |

July 24 7:30pm The Little Princess Shirley Temple, Richard Greene and Ceaser Romero In Victorian England little Sara Crewe's widowed father is sent to the Boer War. When he is reported killed the evil head mistress at her boarding school turns Sara into a servant. She suffers with dignity until her shell-shocked father returns. Run Time - 91 min. |

July 31 7:30pm Goodbye Mr. Chips Robert Donat, Greer Garson and Terry Kilburn An old classics teacher looks back over his long career, remembering pupils and colleagues, and above all the idyllic courtship and marriage that transformed his life. Run Time - 114 min. |

August 7 7:30pm Babes in Arms Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland and Guy Kibbee In this musical, with autobiographical elements of Mickey Rooney's life, he plays Mickey Moran, a talented singer and musician, son of a veteran from the show business. Mickey has a partner, Patsi Barton (Judy Garland), a pretty girl and also a very talented singer. One day, a big opportunity arrives for Mickey, a big contract to set up his own show. However, things don't go well, and in order to avoid being sent to a work farm, he'll improvise a show in the country, despite the awful weather conditions. Patsi's in love with Mickey, he loves her too, but for him the show must go on, and his big dream maybe will come true: formally stage his play in a big scenario, with a huge production. August 14 7:30pm Destry Rides Again Marlene Dietrich, James Stewart and Brian Donlevy Kent, the unscrupulous boss of Bottleneck has Sheriff Keogh killed when he asks one too many questions about a rigged poker game that gives Kent a stranglehold over the local cattle rangers. The mayor, who is in cahoots with Kent appoints the town drunk, Washington Dimsdale, as the new sheriff assuming that he'll be easy to control. But what the mayor doesn't know is that Dimsdale was a deputy under famous lawman, Tom Destry, and is able to call upon the equally formidable Tom Destry Jr to be his deputy. Featuring a career reviving performance from Marlene Dietrich as bar singer Frenchie, which could well have been the inspiration for Madeline Kahn's "Blazing Saddles" character, Lili Von Schtupp. Run Time - 94 min. |

August 21 7:30pm Dark Victory Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan Judith Traherne is at the height of young society when Dr. Frederick Steele diagnoses a brain tumor. After surgery she falls in love with Steele. The doctor tells her secretary that the tumor will come back and eventually kill her. Learning this, Judith becomes manic and depressive. Her horse trainer Michael, who loves her, tells her to get as much out of life as she can. She marries Steele who intends to find a cure for her illness. As he goes off to a conference in New York failing eyesight indicates to Judith that she is dying. Run Time - 104 min. |

August 29 7:30pm Gone with the Wind Clark Gable, Viven Leigh, Olivia de Havilland and George Reeves Scarlett is a woman who can deal with a nation at war, Atlanta burning, the Union Army carrying off everything from her beloved Tara, the carpetbaggers who arrive after the war. Scarlett is beautiful. She has vitality. But Ashley, the man she has wanted for so long, is going to marry his placid cousin, Melanie. Mammy warns Scarlett to behave herself at the party at Twelve Oaks. There is a new man there that day, the day the Civil War begins. Rhett Butler.
